Concordia Squash Players,
As promised I'm sorting out this seasons individual Handicap Competition for the end of this month. The team fixture lists look favourable so it works out well.
I've considered a few formats but would like to stay with the 3 man round robin format (1st round only) I'll see how the entry list looks. On that note can I have entries ASAP, closing date is Friday 15th January.
First round matches will be on Monday 25th January, group winners (possibly a runner-up or two) will go on to play single knock out matches on Monday 1st February. I will not confirm the dates for the latter stages until I have all the entries in.
This is an opportunity for players of ALL standards from ALL our leagues to have a go at playing those above and below you.
Your name could be on the trophy. Get your entries in.

2015 Concordia Closed Finals

24/12/2015

The A, B and C finals took place on Tuesday 22nd December and this is how it all unfolded.
Unfortunately Andy Dolan, having been ill for the best part of a week, turned out at less than 100% and his match with Tony Hedley in the A final wasn't quite the battle we anticipated. These things can't be helped and I'm very grateful that Andy turned out at all. He still played some entertaining squash testing Tony along the way. 3-0 to Tony, his eighth win.
In the B final Steve Goldie's quality shots proved too much for Peter Archbold. A good contest with a 3-0 scoreline but all were close games, no shortage of effort from Peter.
In the C final Keith Grey, always the battling entertainer, and Martin Davison provided us with a match difficult to predict.
Looking at results against other club players you would say Martin had the edge. Tell that to Keith Grey !
It ended 3-2 to Mr Davison but it was far from easy and both players gave us a great contest to watch.
After presentations, a trip to the village, beer and curry flowed, the world was put right and financial plans put in place for a new squash club in Cramlington. Where the £1 million + was to come from to do this was never quite resolved.
A good night all round........ I think. Thank you to all who came along to support the event and to Jamie Morton for taking the helm for the A final.
Look out for the Handicap competition around late January/February and the 2016 Closed will hopefully be back at it's regular spot in April.
Enjoy your squash.

Concordia Closed 2015 semi finals

16/12/2015

Concordia Closed 2015 semi finals night. Tuesday 15th December.
Things went very much to form in the A competition with the Morton brothers up against the top two in the club, Tony Hedley and Andy Dolan. Both favourites dominated proceedings from start to finish with 3-0 scorelines.
In stark contrast, the B competition provided the 2 battles of the night. Steve Goldie and Michael Jones provided much entertainment with long drawn out rallies, both players looking for an opening which didn't come readily, it was hard to see who would come out on top in this one. After going 2-1 down Steve turned things round and took the match 3-2.
Peter Archibold and Chris Brock had their own epic on court 1 which unfolded like a book. Peter went 2-0 up but had to work so very hard to do so. At 12-12 in the third you sensed that Peter needed to finish off the match fearing a Chris Brock come back in the fourth and fifth. The anxiety showed and Peter tightened, 3 rushed shots later Chris had taken the game
15-12. As scripted (almost) Chris also took the fourth. Then the twist, Peter came back with some really intelligent squash, slowing down the pace and keeping it high and tight. Peter took the match 15-7 in the 5th. Great to watch.
The C competition saw Robin Ritchie make light work of  Keith Grey who worked hard but couldn't deal with Robin's consistency, 3-0 to Robin. A similar score line in the other semi with Martin Davison overhauling Mark Knott 3-0 after some unorthodox but entertaining rallies. No shortage of effort or commitment from both players.
Thank you to those who came along and supported the match, cheers Dan for the refreshment and thank you to those who marked games.
The finals are on Tuesday 22nd December, 6.40pm start. Beer and curry in the village to follow.
Please come along and support the event. Players, family and friends are all welcome.

DECEMBER 2015 SQUASh COMPETITION

9/12/2015

Concordia Squash Players,

The first round of the C competition 2015 took place on Tuesday evening, 8th December. 4 of our junior players entered reducing the average age of entrants considerably. A lot more than anyone would want to admit !
Roland Smith probably had the toughest task of the night having to work hard against the quick and ever improving Elliott Harrison. The 3-0 result doesn't reflect the battle on court. Roland's consistency made the difference. Great match.
Robin Ritchie, Peter Irlam and Don Pattison were the other seniors drawn against opposition at least 40 years younger. (Sorry guys but it's true) All 3 demonstrated their experience and quality but gave their young opponents a good run out. Thank you to them.
John Ormsby's power serve proved too much for Alan Bell,
Martin Davison put in one of his better performances to over run Steve Lavery, they've have had their battles in the past. Last but not least, Mark Knott beat the always entertaining Bill Johnson in a well humoured encounter, both playing some shots never seen before nor to be seen again.
Keith Gray went through with a bye, Rory Whaling having to withdraw with injury. Get well soon Rory.

The last 8 play Monday 14th December
Come along and support the event.

  The draw for the last 8 was conducted straight after. This is who plays who on Monday 14th December, 6pm start;
Keith Gray          v          James Rowe
John Ormsby     v          Robin Ritchie
Peter Irlam        v          Mark Knott
Roland Smith    v          Martin Davison.
On Monday 14th December all 3 separate A, B and C Competitions will be played, the last 4 in each to play their semi finals the next night, Tuesday 15th. Come along and support the event, you'll need to bring your own refreshment.
See you there.

I have booked the courts and more or less got this years competition sorted.

As you know there is an A, a B and a C competition this year.
The C competition has 16 players in the draw, their first round is on Tuesday 8th December (6pm start)

I'm sorry that 3rd team players have a team game the very next night but it has been tricky with all the teams having matches around this period.

The 8 first round winners in the 'C' go through to play on Monday 14th December along with those in the A and B competition. I have all 3 courts, so all 3 competitions will progress simultaneously.

What are effectively the semi finals are to be played on Tuesday 15th December with the A ,B and C

Finals to be played consecutively (all on court) on Tuesday 22nd December, 6.40pm start. For those who want to make a night of it, beer and a curry in the village afterwards.

There is much speculation about Concordia Bar and when it might close a s part of the refurbishment, I have no idea how that will pan out, I don't think the management have any idea either !

Hopefully there will be no disruption to the courts themselves.
I'll keep you posted.

Concordia Squash Players,
The Handicap Final will take place on Tuesday 19th May 2015. 6.40pm start.
Gary Storey (-12) will try to take the spoils from Tony Hedley (-20) who hasn't looked too troubled so far !
Please try and make it to the event. The bar is open.
I nearly have sufficient numbers to place an order for both T-shirts and Hoodies. Please get in touch if you haven't already ordered. Black T-shirts are by far the most popular and Grey has just sneaked it for the Hoodies.

Concordia squash 2015 handicap semis

29/4/2015

Concordia Squash Players,

Oh what complicated lives. Due to circumstances beyond my control (nothing to do with court availability) the Handicap final scheduled for Friday has been postponed. On that note there are two courts going spare at 6.40pm and 7.20pm on Friday 1st May if anyone wants to use them, first come first served.

This is how the competition panned out.

On Monday Rob Owen continued his streak of length nicks this time against Keith Grey and off the forehand drive. He was too strong for Keith and won 2-0 to earn a match against Mr Hedley.

Joe Race had a marathon with Robin Ritchie who put up a strong fight. Great match with Joe coming through 21-19 in the third. Tony Hedley eased through his quarter against a plucky Peter Edney, never short on effort.

Gary Storey's fitness and speed overturned Ian Morton's racket skills, a good match to watch.

Tuesday saw 2 straight forward semi finals, Tony Hedley beat Rob Owen and Gary Storey beat Joe Race with a solid length game.

The final with Gary Storey v Tony Hedley is to be arranged.

Cheers Ian Mc

Normally I would give an over view of how the competition unfolded and include some of the highlights. I have a dilemma here since there were so many, in fact I can’t think of any low lights.

For the last 4 years the 1st round format has been the 3 man round robin group stage primarily introduced to get everyone in the club together irrespective of standard. In an ideal world I would have liked to see more players from the lower leagues taking part but I understand not all can commit so much time to a squash tournament. Despite this there was a large entry and the 1st round was split over Monday and Tuesday evening.

On a personal note it was good to see some juniors entrants, I’m sure their experience in the competition will hold them in good stead for the future. All gave good account of themselves.

With all players having to play 2 games on the night and fighting for the maximum points tally (84- see results table below) there was much toil.

Monday saw all the higher handicapped players going through although non of them had an easy time of it.

Bill Johnson provided the entertainment on the lighter side with good humored banter during his encounters with top handicapper Tony Hedley and Ian Rowe who has just returned to the game after a few years, I won’t say how many.

It seemed the best was saved until last on Monday night with a great battle between Dave Hall and Rory Whalling. No shortage of effort or ability with a closely fought contest and many long rallies.

(In fact Dave went on to provide what was the contest of the tournament so far when he played Gary Storey in the last 16.)

Really entertaining squash.

Tuesday caused some logistic problems for the organiser when we ran out of court time. My error in failing to factor in an additional group late on. Thank you to Keith Grey and Dave Hall who saved the day with a ’spare’ court and to the players who had to play way more squash on Wednesday to catch up, they were Robin Ritchie, Mark Coxon, Martin Davison and particularly Keith Grey and Peter Archibold.

Just like the previous night, it was late on when 2 real battles unfolded. Robin Ritchie was up against a much improved Mark Coxon while Peter Archibold had a monumental battle with Martin Davison. Martin then had another battle with Keith Grey.

2 games were left unfinished at 1-1 with the game between Keith Grey and Peter Archibold not played at all. With an early Wednesday start these matters were resolved and the last 16 started in earnest.

1st Round Points Tally

Joe Race                  84pts

John Ormsby            70pts

Adam Rowe              74pts

Tony Hedley              84pts

Bill Johnson              65pts

Ian Rowe                  81pts (unable to play the next round)

Ian Morton                84pts

Derek Railston          74pts

Dave Barlow             71pts

Gary Story                84pts

Mark Knott               72pts

Steve Lavery            73pts

Dave Hall                 84pts

Rory Whaling           75pts

Jonny Woodhouse   79pts

Andy Lawrence        84pts

Bruno Gaultier         61pts

James Rowe           82pts

Dan Cussak            84pts

Rob Owen               82pts

Luke Fecitt              74pts

Nick Fecitt               62pts

Peter Edney            84pts

Elliott Harrison         77pts

Peter Archibold        75pts

Martin Davison         77pts

Keith Grey                84pts

Robin Ritchie            81pts

Mark Knott                65pts

Mark Coxon              84pts

Thank you to Mark Knott who selflessly stood in at the last minute to ensure the group stages stayed honest on both Monday and Tuesday night.

The last 16.

Robin Ritchie proved too strong for Jonnie Woodhouse although Jonnie is showing he too is improving.

Joe Race beat the young James Rowe.

Andy Lawrence lost to Rob Owen who served strongly on the night, never seen so many nicks off Rob’s serve ! You don’t get the nicks for nothing, clever squash.

Ian Morton beat Dan Cussack.

Tony Hedley was far too strong for Mark Coxon despite a -20 handicap. Mark worked very hard but was beaten by an immaculate length game.

Keith Grey beat Elliott Harrison- another junior who shows great promise.

Never short of effort, Peter Edney put in a great performance to beat Martin Davison. Entertaining stuff.

Last but not least, Gary Storey beat Dave Hall in what was the match of the tournament so far. At one all and after many many long rallies it looked like youth would be the deciding factor with Dave looking tired. Not so. Dave played some great squash, found a new source of energy and kept a 5 point lead until the mid teens.

Gary was showing signs of pressure with the odd unforced error but continued to keep the rallies going. It paid off in the end, Gary took his last 5 points in succession. 21-14 in the end. A great game of squash.

Please support the event, the quarter finals are on Monday 27th April, 6.40pm start.

2014/5 handicap competition w/c 20th april

Concordia Squash Players,
A combination of factors had meant it has been a bit tricky trying to fit in our Handicap competition this season. I'm looking at organising it for the week AFTER the Easter break. W/C Monday 20th April.
The end of season 'Closed' will be put back to the early part of the 2015/2016 season.
With 3 men's teams and a hectic fixture list in March, a number of our players entering several county competitions and an Early Easter this year this seems the best course of action.
Can I have entries ASAP for this the 'individual' Handicap Competition.
Don't forget this is all about involving club members from all the leagues, the handicap system hopefully evening things out. Entry is free and you are guaranteed at least 2 games. The format and schedule will be sorted once I have an idea of numbers but should be as previous years. (Round robin 1st round and knockout thereafter)
Cheers

April 2014 mini league finals

24/7/2014

Concordia  Squash Players,

The latest team Handicap final took place on Wednesday 23rd July 2014. There was
going to be a new name on the trophy after Gangnam Style were beaten in the semi
finals. The Mishits, also former winners were up against a  very determined Bruno's Mob.
A  battle for 3rd and 4th places was also enacted with Bill's Bashers up against
Roland's Old Un's.  Andy Wally put in a great effort to hold off a very fit and speedy Mark Knott  who very nearly overturned a hefty handicap. With two of the games ending 21-20,  Mark only dropped  a single point for his team. Well done to both players  who provided some great entertaining rallies. The  young Joe Race for the Bashers was just too strong for Peter Brewis winning  21-15, 21-16.
Finally  the 2 captains went head to head. Roland had a huge task in  overturning Bill Johnson's +11 handicap. A good humoured but competitive  match saw Bill take the win and secure the 3rd place for his team.
In the final itself Peter Irlam showed grit and determination to beat Dave Hall.
First blood to Bruno's Mob. Chris Brock leading the Mishits was up against  Bruno himself and lost 2-0 in a closely fought match with many long rallies  which could have gone either way.
Last  on was one of our up and coming stars for the future, Mark Coxon who played
Ian McAllister. With +7 against -12 handicap Mark needed to  finish the rallies without errors while Ian played very  conservative squash to slowly eat away the backlog. Ian won  21-20, 21-15. Bruno's Mob with a 3-0 win (Vive la Resistance) have  their name on the trophy.
Look  out for the next team event September/October time, get yourself a team of
3 and enter, it's a great way to see everyone in the club and play  different players on level terms.
Don't  forget the club AGM on Thursday 31st July, 7.30pm at Concordia Bar. Please
come along.

Friday night finals night.
Chris Brock and Mark Knott have both showed much improvement this season and they provided a thoroughly entertaining match in the B competition final. Chris went 2-0 up playing some textbook length ball giving Mark little chance to respond. At 2-0 Chris seemed to tire and Mark clawed his way back. 3-2 to Mark in the end but there is no doubt Chris has taken a step up with his squash. A great match to watch.
The A final saw Tony Hedley prove to be too strong for Jamie Morton. Jamie couldn't produce the boast nicks as he did in the semi final and unlike that semi Tony picked up Jamie's ferocious forehand drives keeping Jamie in the backhand corner much of the game. 3-0 to Tony.
That's Tony's 7th title. A great record.
Thank you to all who helped mark games throughout the week, a great turnout this year.
Watch out for a 3 man mini league handicap early June for thosewho want to play through the summer.

4  great games last night to make it an interesting Friday finals night.
Mark  Knott's strength was his speed around the court and he managed to wear  down Rob Owen to win 3-1 in the first of the B competition matches.
In  the other match Nick Fecitt was simply too good for Chris Brock despite the  improvement Chris has shown this season. Nick however couldn't make the final  and forfeited the match. Chris and Mark should provide a  good B final.
In  the 'A' competition Tony Hedley overhauled Steve Goldie with a comfortable 3-0  win playing steady and controlled squash. The last game saw Jamie Morton  beat Ian McAllister 3-1 with every game won by small margins. Jamie's nicks  and ferocious forehand drives were simply too good on the  night.
If  Jamie can replicate this form the A final should be a real spectacle.
Please  come along and support the event. 6.40pm start.

The 2nd round of the A competition took place last night
(Tuesday 29th) with one or two players showing signs of a hard season.

Keith Gray was once again (isn't he always) up against Tony Hedley. 3-0 to  Tony.
Peter Irlam was stuck in Leeds so Rory Whaling with a bye now has to  face Tony in the quarters.
Dan Cussack showed how his team squash this season has seen his game go from strength to strength, he beat Robin Ritchie 3-0.
Some great squash from Steve Goldie and Ian Morton was the tie of  the night with Ian well bandaged up. Steve went through 3-2.
Although  the last match of the night, Dave Hall narrowly lost to Jamie Morton, another  great match. Mark Livingstone beat John Ormsby (a battle of the blasters)
Bruno Gaultier beat Les Carr and Ian McAllister beat Paul Blakely.
Tonight Dan will face Steve Goldie, Jamie Morton will play Mark Livingstone and Bruno will play Ian McAllister.
The B  competition got off to a shaky start with a number of no shows. Although  injured, Graeme Sneddon put up a valiant fight to narrowly loose to Dave  Mcrae. Rob Owen's opponent couldn't make it, thanks to Rob who stayed and marked  games all night. Mark Knott beat Paul Scott, Nick Fecitt was too strong for  Peter Edney, Martin Davison just pipped Chris Brock and Andrew Pattison won  the family battle over his Dad who kindly stood in at the last minute  (another no show) With only 5 out right winners I needed 3 highest scoring  losers to go through to make the last 8, these were Chris Brock (62pts) Paul  Scott (52pts and Don Pattison (52 pts) Bill Johnson will be doing the  draw for the B' tonight at 6pm, potentially there could be some re-matches,
depends how the names come out. Even if not playing, come along.

2014 handicap qtr finals

19/2/2014

The quarter finals were played on Tuesday 18th February 2014.
Names  were drawn out of the hat on the night and some interesting contests  emerged.
First  up was Michael Jones (-1) v Ian McAllister (-16). Quite a straight forward  affair as it turned out with Michael in good form. He won the match comfortably  21-6, 21-5.
Robin  Ritchie (-2)  was drawn against David McRae (+11). David is a much improved  player this season and it looked a big ask for Robin to overhaul the  deficit in short time however he hung on in the third to win 21-18, 16-21,  21-17. There is no doubt, David had chances, but it wasn't to  be.
Jamie  Morton (-12) had a similar task playing Dan Cussack (0) This also went to the  wire in the third. Dan took the first game 21-19 but worked hard, Jamie came  back in the second 21-14. Dan
got a second wind as he has done all season in his team games and despite a  'time out' with a foot injury Dan held out and took the match 21-17.
Last  but not least, Keith Grey (+6) and Rob Owen (+7) fought out a close match with  Rob winning 21-19 and 21-20. These lads have played each other many times and  know each others strengths and weaknesses. They don't come much  closer, Keith's league game just before this match might have been  his undoing, who's to say. The semi finals and final will be  on Tuesday 11th March 2014 with a 6.40pm start, not 6pm which proved a  little early for some getting away from work. Please come along and support the  event.

Concordia Squash  Players,

There is much to report following the 1st round of this years   competition  nearly all of it good in a backhanded sort of way. Matches  were off to a  prompt 6pm start but it was clear by 8pm that time was  going to be an  issue.
Most of the matches were evenly fought and most went to 3. The  warm courts made for some long rallies and some truly  entertaining  squash.
This is how it turned out.
Jamie Morton, Dave McRae, Mark Knott Dan Cussack and Michael Jones all got through to the  knock out stage after they  managed to win both their group matches and  thus scored the maximum 84 points  (2x21 in each match)
Dave McRae  although playing off a useful +10  played some good squash and held his  nerve to win his games. A much  improved player.
Dan Cussack and  Keith Grey had their now customary battle in Group 6, Dan the victor  however it was so very close  and Keith is the current contender for the  highest scoring runner up with 81
points. Daniel Monera and Robin  Ritchie were oh so close with 80 points  each., such were the fine  margins.
The other 2 groups were unresolved after  the lights went out at 10.15pm. In group 1 Martin Davison ended with a  total of 79 points,  the group to be decided on completion of the match between  Tony Hedley  and Rob Owen. That match is evenly poised at 13-5 to Rob in
the third.
Group 4 is similar, Dave Armstrong ended with a total tally  of 77 points but  the match between Ian McAllister and Andy Lawrence is  still to finish.  The match stands at 21-18 to Ian, in the 1st, with Andy up  13-8 in the  2nd.
Both these games need to be finalised ASAP, the knock  out stage is on 18th February so there should be plenty of time.
I'll  keep you posted.
I couldn't help noticing nearly all contenders this year  paid particular  attention to the scores, last years maths might have something  to do  with that ! Cheers Don.

Tony Hedley presenting Team Gangnam style with the mini leagues plaque
Sunday the 8th September saw some exciting squash played at  Concordia as the finals of the mini leagues took place.

Team Norfolk  and  Chance;  David MaCrae, Peter Edney and Roland Smith played Team Gangnam  Style;  Keith Gray, Andy  Lawrence and Mark Knott

In the first game Andy Lawrence played David MaCrae.  Despite a huge effort from David to stay on terms, Andy managed to claw back the  handicap points and go on to win 21-12 and  21-14.

The second game was a very close, hard  fought match between Don Pattison and Roland Smith. Don won the first game 21-20  and looked to have the match in the bag when he took the second game to 19-16.  However, Roland pulled it back to 20 all, and then took the game 21-20. The  match was decided in a gruelling 3rd game which Roland stole at the end  on  21-19.

The final match was between Keith Grey  and Peter Edney. Both players showed plenty of skill and determination and some  long rallies ensued. In the end Keith managed to keep it tight and pulled off a  well deserved victory 21-16 and 21-19.

This  sealed the victory for Team Gangnam style. Congratulations go to Andy, Don and  Keith for an excellent team effort and to David, Peter and Roland for providing  some stiff competition and an entertaining evening.

Everyone really enjoyed the competition and all look  forward to the next mini league competition. Thanks go out to Don and Mark for  scoring, and to the spectators who turned up and gave plenty of support to the  players. And a big thank you to Ian for organising it for us.

The 2013 closed competition finals got off to a great start with the 'B' match between Mark Knott and Nick Fecitt.
Mark has made much progress this season and his boundless energy and enthusiasm made for a good contest which thoroughly entertained the crowd. Nick' shot selection kept him in control most of the time and he came through to win 3-0 however Mark didn't make it easy for him.
The 'A' final was always going to be a big ask for Ian Morton to take anything from Tony Hedley who had already shown his overall fitness and speed around the court in his semi against Jamie Morton. Early exchanges demonstrated both players ability to rally and also finish them with some great drives finding the nick. Unfortunately just as the contest was hoting up Ian suffered a pulled calf and could not play on. I'm sure Ian will come back stronger next season.
Thank you to Jamie Morton who stepped up to give Tony a game for the spectators.
The short presentation took place in Concordia bar.

Thank you to all who came up to support the event.

Concordia Mini League Results

25/3/2013

Concordia Squash Players,
The mini league matches were played last night and here are the results.

Norfolk +Good beat Macrae's Mob, unfortunately One of Mcrae's Mob failed to  turn up which meant that Don Pattison didn't get a game at all  and Mcrae's Mob had no chance of going on to play the 2nd Strings as  highest scoring losers. Les Escargots had the pleasure of playing  that match against 2nd Strings after they were beaten by the Miss  Fits.
Another epic between Tony Hedley (Miss Fit)  and Keith Gray (Les  Escargots) provided much entertainment.
Broken Strings beat Concordia  Tomatoes and the 2nd Strings were just too strong for a tired Les Escorgots  although they put up a good fight.
I'll do the draw for the semi's  on Wednesday night (27th March) when the men's 2nd team play their final match  of the season (with a chance of promotion)
The men's 1st team are also  at home this week, they play their last game on Thursday 28th March. Come along  and support the teams.
