CONCORDIA 3 vs.  NORTHUMBERLAND 6

11/9/2014

First to play was Gary Storey who was playing at number 3 his  opponent was Stephen Hierons, Gary played his normal game putting himself all  over the court chasing every ball as this was Gary’s first team game he played  well although Stephen played well during the first game winning 15-10 Gary  played some good squash but both players made quite a few mistakes during the  games, at the end of the match Gary managed a good win 3-1 well done to both  lads.

Next to play was Peter Irlam and Scott Little the first game was  won by Peter playing some good squash and winning 15-3 putting Scott under pressure but Scott was an experienced player and came back strong to win the  second game 15-10 this was turning out to be a good battle peter won the third  game 15-11 and stayed strong to take the match 15-8 in his final game this was  a good game to watch well done to both
players.

Next up was Mark Knott and Chris Hierons this was expected to be  a good game to watch with Mark playing one of the younger players but Mark  played some sensible squash playing some tricky shots and frustrating his  opponent in to making some forced errors. It was all over after a very short  time leaving Chris beaten 3 -0 let’s see if Chris can have his revenge in the  return match.

Next to play was Dan Cusack his opponent again was a young man  Jonathon Head This was very similar to the last game Dan playing some good solid  squash but playing some trick shots that left Jonathon wondering how to deal  with Dan. It was all over after a short period ending 3 -0 to Dan well done to  both players.

The final game was played by our number 1 player Andy Lawrence  who was against Marcus Allsop this game looked like it was going to be a good  match to watch and we weren’t disappointed Andy won the first game 15 -13 then  the second 15 -13 again Marcus was an experienced player and came back to win  the next two games 15 -14 and again 15 -14 the final game was set to be a hard  trying game but Andy dug deep and overcome to win 15 -8 this was a great match  to watch and both players deserve a pat on the back for playing some great  rally’s.

Well done Concordia 3 on a great start to the new  season.

Andy vs Marcus 15-13, 15-13, 14-15, 14-15,  15-8

Dan Vs Jonathon 15-6, 15-8, 15-9

Mark Vs Chris 15-8, 15-7,  15-5

Gary Vs Stephen 10-15, 15-12, 15-8,  15-14

Peter Vs Scott 15-3, 10-15, 15-11,  15-8

Concordia 3rd team 2013/14 report

Now the 3rd team have come to the end of their first season and finished 4th or 5th this gives me a chance to thank everyone for their hard work and commitment especially Dan Cusack who organised this seasons Tee Shirts. “ not sure if I put weight on or they shrunk in the wash ”We have had a strange season losing some of our regular players due to work commitments and injury but some good reserves have stepped in and come through for us.

A bit of a concern is the number of players who have played for the 3rd team then required medical attention? Michael Jones, Daniel Monera, Mark Knott

Let’s hope everyone gets fit and returns as soon as possible a few characters have taken the headlines this season one being chopper Irlam who smashed his opponent Chris Wall in the neck with his racket forcing his opponent to retire from the game.

“Strange Technique but very affective”

Then there was Andy I have to Baby sit Lawrence who played some great games and had to pull out all the stops when playing Fiona from Walker and Karen from Chester-Le-Street. Well done Andy but Karen really kicked your butt.

But we can’t end it there without mentioning High drop was that a boast Grey who managed to stay fit and play all his team games well done Keith.

And a final mention to Daniel Monera who played as reserve in a couple of games I say play but it was more like a training session for Daniel who would be aiming for the 2nd team if he was not injured.

A big thank you and roll on next season.

Concordia 2nd team 2013/14 report

The 2nd team started the season with high hopes having gained promotion in their 1st season.

So they started off in Div 5 believing they could get back to back promotions – “ you have to have a sense of purpose”.

Things started well and they won their 1st two games – the sense of optimism was high at this point.

It all came back to reality on a Saturday night at Jesmond. Middle aged men have better things to do on Saturdayevenings and it showed as the “Jesmond Juniors” reminded them that focussing on the game and not the “pub” does help.

Next was Eldon Leisure and a tight game against evenly matched players, but another loss. The wheels had come off the “Promotion Fun Bus!!”

However back to back victories got the wheels rolling again and the belief was back.

It came crashing back down though in a poor night at Tynemouth. A double header match, both league and cup. Only Steve Goldie, Mr Reliable, was able to hold his head high. Notable highlight was Peter Archbold making his debut. Although we are not sure that he saw it as a highlight when he encountered his 1st experience of playing a lady. She was good!!

So they now had a sense of despondency, out of cup and promotion slipping away.

Back to back wins though lifted the mood but those boys atConsett and Jesmond were leading the way and did not look like slipping up.

Consett away proved to be the undoing with only Mark managing a win, albeit against an injured opponent. Points are points though. Michael Jones made his team squash debut and did himself justice against a very wily opponent, battle of the drop shots!

5 wins and 4 losses in the 2nd half of the season proved to be a bridge too far
for the boys and a respectable 4th place was the final placing.

So another promotion was, in the end, aspirational but not quite a reality, looks like it will have to wait a season.

All in all, though, a very good campaign and a respectable placing.

One mention should go to Bruno Gaultier. Bruno, who seemed a little sceptical about Team Squash  and the commitment required, stepped in to cover Dave Hall, who unfortunately got injured mid-season. Bruno then seemed to thrive on the challenge and won 7 out of the 8 games he played, a great performance.

Steve Goldie, lived up to his Mr Reliable tag, winning 13 of the 18 games he played, thanks Steve!

2nd team captain would like to thank Nick Fecitt, Dave Hall, Bruno Gaultier, Steve Goldie, Rory Whaling, for their time and commitment over the season.

Thanks also Peter Archbold and Michael Jones for covering at very short notice, greatly appreciated, and to Don Pattinson and Graeme Sneddon, who came to support and ended up scoring on more than one occasion, sure they enjoyed it really!!

First up was Daniel Monera he was playing Keith Jackson the first game gave Daniel no problems winning 15-4 unfortunately for Keith Daniel showed his skill in the game winning 15-5 then 15-12 at times it looked like a practice session for Daniel who I am sure will be pushing for the second team next season.

The next game was Keith Grey who was playing against Dave Robson the first game was won by Keith 15-5 Keith played some really good squash playing excellent length and his boast was very affective. The second game again went to Keith 15-5 at one point he played a perfect drop shot (for a change) that was witnessed by the third team fan club (Dave Buckle). It was noticed that Keith had been getting extra coaching from his wife. The third game was a little closer but Keith was to strong and won 15-8 well done Keith some good games.

Next up was Peter Irlam he was playing Carl Fairless Peter took the first game 15-7 and we watched some great rallies the next game was won by Carl 8-15 this looked like it was going to be a good match to watch and they did not let us down Peter winning the next game 15-9 and the final game  15-10.

Now it was Dan Cusack’s turn to show why he was playing at number  1 his opponent was Jim Chambers Dan had extra pressure as his coach Dave Barnet was looking on to see if his coaching was working. Dan did not let him down  winning 15-3 then 15-4 with the final game ending 15-9 well done Dan as Jim is a  wily old fox who should not be under estimated.

Our final game watched Andy Lawrence who eventually turned up  play Tim Blake. Tim was favourite to take this match as he looked good in the warm up showing good racket skills unfortunately nobody told Andy and he won the  first game 15-13 some great rallies being played the next game was won by Andy again winning 15-6 the final game was difficult as Andy was showing his age and only managed to win 15-12. Well done to both players a good match to  watch.

CONCORDIA 3 V CHESTER LE STREET 3

First up was Paul Blakey who was playing Keith Langley  unfortunately Paul had previously played a league game so this was always going  to be a difficult game. Paul lost the first game 8 - 15 the second game Paul  had the game in the bag but in his own words was out of sorts losing 12 - 15
Paul did well in the third but was beaten by a better player with a final score  of 13 - 15 well done to Keith & Paul for an entertaining  game.

Next up was Keith Grey playing against Paul Felton the first game  ended 9 - 15 and Keith looked a little shocked how quick it was all over, Paul  played some good shots and had Keith digging deep to stay in the game. The  second game was very similar ending 8 - 15 with Keith trying to play some good  length but struggling to keep the ball close to the wall. The final game was  entertaining and very competitive Keith was playing better and Paul starting to  make mistakes but unfortunately Keith lost to a better player in the end 12  -15.

This put Chester le St ahead two games next was the Captain Mark Knott who was playing Mike Littlechild, Mark was carrying an injury in to the  game and new if Mike realized he was struggling to run then the games would be  over very quickly. The first game was won by Mike 13 -15 this was now set up for  a good second game and Mark & Mike didn’t let us down the game could have
gone either way but Mike won the second 14 -15 the third saw Mark ahead 7 -3 but  Mike using his experience managed to get himself back in to the game after an  exciting climax the game ended 14 -15 and Chester lee St had won another match  well done to Mike.

Next to play was Dan Cusack who was playing at number 1 his opponent was Andy Fitzpatrick both players played well but Andy showed his  superiority in the first game winning 7 -15 the second game saw Andy put on the  pressure and cause Dan to pick up his game but Andy was just too good and Dan  lost 4 -15 the third was very quick and painless for Dan as Andy smashed home  with a 5 -15 win giving Chester Le St another match win. (May be smashed was a  bit strong)

Our final game was with Andy Lawrence and Dave Harrison Andy  started the first game struggling to stay with Dave who was playing some good  squash the first game ended 9 -15 after Andy had the classic team talk and  boost of confidence he played the second game a lot better but still was beaten  11 -15 this looked like it was all over but Andy dug deep and won Concordia 3s  first game against Chester Le St winning 15 -14 this looked like it was the  turning point for Andy to go on and win our first match unfortunately he lost  the next 5 -15 leaving the rest of the team stunned as to what had just  happened.

Well done to Chester Le St and good luck with the rest of the  season lads.

Concordia 3 Vs Walker

First up was Peter Edney who came in as a reserve playing at 5,  his opponent was Nick Humphrey, Peter took the first game 15 - 9 then Nick  fought back to win 15 – 6 this put the pressure on peter who came through to  win 3 -1 a good game to watch.

Next up was Keith Grey he was playing at 3 and was up against a  good player called Peter Downs. Keith started well taking the first game 15 -5  but then Peter showed his class to come back 3 -1 Keith is now officially king  of the “HIGH DROPs”.

Andy Lawrence Was next to take the pressure off the rest of the  team he was playing at 2 his opponent was Stephen Drummond an experienced player  who was not going to make Andy’s job easy. Andy needed to leave early and made a  quick killing winning 3-0 Andy played really well shame he can’t remember to pay  his subs as quick. Ha Ha

It was now Rob Owen’s turn to show the rest of the team why he  should be selected to play. Robs opponent was Adam Perrin who was out played by  a more experienced player, Rob played a great game and came through to win 3 –  0.

Even though Concordia 3 had won at this point Dan Cusack was  ready to show why he was playing at number 1 his opponent was Fiona Macfarlane  who we had watched previously and new Dan was in for a hard game. Fiona started  the match winning the first game 15 – 12. Dan new he had to dig deep and start  playing safe squash, Dan went on to win the next two games this made it 2 – 1
at this point Dan was running out of steam at 8 - 8 you could see Dan   take a deep breath focus and slow his game down. Fiona found this  difficult which allowed Dan to steam ahead and take the final game 15 –  8.

This was a good win for Concordia 3 and well played to the  reserves.

Concordia 3 V Boldon 3

A good night’s squash up first was Dan Cusack playing Marc Shipley this was expected to be a hard game for Dan who was playing at No1 but he came through for Concordia 3 with a solid 3-0 win.
Up next was Keith Grey he was playing Ted Staincliffe at 1-1 Keith’s fitness showed as he went on to win the following two games well done Keith.
Peter Irlam now playing at four worked hard but lost 3-1 Peter still trying to burn off the Xmas puds.
Mark was up next playing John Glenwright. Mark took the first two games without any problems but then John had changed his tactic and came back winning the next game. Mark had to dig deep but managed to win 3-1.
The final game was Andy Lawrence and Connor Snaith. Andy was losing 2-0 Connor picking him off with his short accurate shots to the front then Andy started playing his game using his skill and fitness to come back and win 3-2.
Overall a great nights squash well done to both teams.

Peter Irlam was up first playing some good squash against Ben Brewin who played a good game taking it to 2 -2 and ending the final game at 14 -15 to Peter.
Next up was Dan Cusack who was against Andy Jewers, Dan started well winning 15-13 but then Andy picked up his game winning 3 -1 overall.
Keith grey was against Matthew Contarini going down two games it looked like it was all over for Keith but he then took the third game working hard unfortunately Matthew came back with a good win at 04 -15 giving him an overall 3-1 win
Next Andy Lawrence played against Paul Nicholson both players worked hard putting on an entertaining match at 2-2. The final game was close ending 15 – 13 to Paul
At this point Concordia 3 had lost to Duston 3 and they were fighting to keep face in their final game Mark knott was against James Forbes James used his experience winning 3 -0.
Well done to Dunston 3 and Concordia have marked this one in the Diary as a one to look forward to in the rematch.

Concordia 3 V Dunston 4

Dunston was leading comfortably with a 2-0 lead then Andy Lawrence came
back from being down to win 3-2 and Dan Cusack had a hard game with

Since the last bulletin all 3 men’s team have had a busy month with all the lads playing at least 3
matches. In actual fact the 1st team have played 4 matches starting with a return to Ashbrook to play their much stronger 1st team.
It was a 5-0 defeat with the only notable highlight seeing Peter Mcleod playing against Tony Hedley. No one wanted to see Tony get beat but Peter Mcleod played almost exhibition squash on a red hot court. Truly a class act and a joy to watch.
Mark Livingstone stood in at 5 to  replace an absent Ian Morton and gave good account of himself gaining I of the  only 2 pts bagged that night.

The losing run continued with a home defeat to Northern 4-1, only Tony Hedley winning his game. Andy Dolan was up against a 14 year old Michael Mattimore who is surely a star for the future,
losing 3-0.

Away to Tynemouth on bonfire night added to the misery when the 1st’s lost 4-1, Andy Dolan collecting 3 pts and the Morton brothers a brace each. 7 points for the match just wasn’t enough.

Their latest match turned thing  around. At home against Eldon Leisure and on warmer home courts for the first time, things had to get better. Eldon are bottom of the league and it was
essential that the team scored well in this game. All came good with a 5-0 win,  an excellent come back from Ian Morton to win 3-2 after being 0-2 down holding  his nerve at 10 all in the third was a determined effort.

The 1st’s have two tough games to play before the Christmas break, the next home game on Thursday 5th December against Ashington.

After a 2 week break and on a  Saturday afternoon the 2nd team travelled to Northumberland 7
(Jesmond) to play their juniors, all no doubt destined to be superstars. Coached  from tots, they don‘t know how to play badly. Only Steve Goldie, technically  proficient himself and Mark Livingstone with his power play managed to win their  games, Dave Hall, Nick Fecitt and Rory Whaling were simply out squashed.  2-3 on the day with 8pts onto their  league tally, no disgrace.

A home game to Eldon Leisure 3 was  next up. This match got off to a bad start with Steve Goldie unavailable at the  last minute. (a car crash no less, fortunately no one was  injured)
Thanks to a last minute call to  Bruno Gaultier, the team remained at full strength.
The match was an evenly fought  contest but for Bruno’s opponent who has had much previous experience at a higher level. Milo McKenzie was his name, Bruno v Milo, sounds more like a
boxing bout. Good squash but Milo was just too strong.
A good effort also from Dave Hall  and Nick Fecitt however they too lost to good opponents.
At  number 1 Mark Livingstone won yet again, playing another Mark. Not easy for the marker. I see their number 2 is  also called Mark so the away fixture next half could be Mark v Mark, marked by
Mark.

2nd team captain has  asked me to mention a sterling effort by Dave Hall who made an excellent job of  marking what was a difficult match on the night with a graceless opponent who
questioned much of the proceedings. It’s a shame to report such goings on but  that’s team squash for you.

On the back of 2 defeats, the 2nd’s came good with a win away from home at Ashington on
6th November.
Nick Fecitt, Rory Whaling and Steve  Goldie secured the points.
A rare defeat for Mark Livingstone  and Dave Hall up against a very strong player sums up the night simply enough.  16 points all the same, keeps them just above mid table.

The men’s 3rd team, new  to the Northumbria league this season have got off to a promising start but without a win.

Their last 3 matches were somewhat  unusual, two home games to Dunston (they have 2 teams in the same league) and an  odd away fixture at Walker who have a very unique court set  up.
Dunston 4 were the first visitors  and the match was a good contest. Keith Grey and Paul Blakely lost their games  but only by the narrowest of margins, both gaining 2 points each for the  team.

Andy Lawrence showed his resilience coming back from behind to win a marathon match, 15-12 in the 5th.  Great effort.

Dan Cussack won his game 3-1 and  with the match at 2-2 it was up to the captain Mark Knott to show his metal.  This he did and won 3-0 to secure the 3rd team’s first victory of the  season.

In between the Dunston sandwich was the trip to Walker where viewing the court proceedings was from either a side  wall window or a door at the back of the court.

Marking the game was carried out  via a side window adjoining a library !. I supposed any disputed decisions could  be checked out quickly enough in the reference section under ’Rules of Squash’
by Y.A. Lett.
Despite the quirky set up all 5  players won their games for a resounding 20 points to 3 victory.

Their latest match, the second of  the Dunston visitors, as expected, was always going to be tough. This was  Dunston 3 and likely to be stronger than Dunston 4. As it proved.

Andy Lawrence battled to gain 2  points for the team and a good win by Peter Irlam playing at 5 added 3 points to  the tally.

A 1-4 defeat but a good effort all  the same. The lads are looking forward to the rematch at the end of February.

Check  the fixtures list for future home games and come along to support our teams. All  games start at 6.40pm and are played on a Wednesday or  Thursday.
